Overview

In its 49th year, MSK’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Alumni Meeting will feature engaging case presentations designed to foster meaningful discussions on the identification and diagnosis of disease. Attendees will also gain deeper biological insights into rare cancer types. This year’s meeting will be a one-day hybrid event, with the option to attend either in person or virtually.

The program will also include the presentation of the Fred W. Stewart Award of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This annual award honors a pathologist whose contributions have significantly advanced our understanding of human cancer, with particular emphasis on clinical impact in diagnosis and patient care. The award reflects the traditions and values brought to the Department of Pathology by Dr. Stewart, who served first as an associate of Dr. James Ewing and later as Chairman of the Department for more than 30 years.

This year’s award recipient is Dr. Esther Oliva, member of the Department of Pathology, Director of the Gynecologic Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Oliva was born in Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain), and trained under three of the world’s most renowned gynecologic pathologists: Dr. Robert E. Scully, Dr. Robert H. Young, and Dr. Jaime Prat. She completed her training in anatomic pathology at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Barcelona) and Massachusetts General Hospital. Her passion lies in teaching new generations of pathologists from around the world.

Her research focuses on neoplastic diseases involving the female genital tract—with particular interest in mesenchymal tumors at the morphologic, translational, and molecular levels—as well as diseases of the genitourinary tract. She is a past president of the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists (ISGyP), during which the ISGyP Live program was implemented. Dr. Oliva is also a past member of the Standing Committee for the fifth series of the World Health Organization (WHO) and served as editor of the Female Genital Tract WHO 5th Series. She serves on the editorial boards of The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Modern Pathology, International Journal of Gynecological Pathology, Advances in Anatomic Pathology, and Seminars in Diagnostic Pathology. Dr. Oliva is an active member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), where she has served on the Abstract Review Board, Education Committee, and Council. She was the co-director of the Long Course on Practical Topics in Uterine Pathology, has taught five short courses, and has served as IAP Vice-Chair for North America.

Dr. Oliva is the editor of the most recent AFIP Fascicle on the Uterine Corpus and co-editor of several widely used textbooks in gynecologic pathology, including Gynecologic Pathology (Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology series) and Diagnostic Pathology: Gynecologic (Amirsys).

Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, attendees will be able to:
  1. Identify pathological features of various cancer types
  2. Describe ancillary techniques and markers which aid in diagnoses
  3. Discuss differential diagnoses and pertinent scientific literature
