Overview

The field of oncologic emergencies has evolved rapidly over the past 15+ years, advancing in parallel with the ongoing development of cancer treatments and interventions. While complications from traditional chemotherapies remain common, the rise of novel cancer treatments has introduced a broader and more complex spectrum of patient presentations—many of which are now increasingly encountered in emergency departments across the country. With few dedicated cancer-specific emergency rooms, these patients are often inappropriately triaged, misdiagnosed, under-treated, or redirected to their oncologists without adequate resolution of their urgent concerns.

Now in its seventh year, this course brings together specialists from across all areas of the cancer treatment spectrum to provide emergency department providers and staff with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively manage both common and uncommon oncologic emergencies. Each session features didactic lectures followed by a live panel discussion and Q&A with expert faculty. Additionally, attendees will receive access to an online syllabus after the course concludes, which will include recorded videos of the presentations/lectures.

Topics include:

  • Pain Control & Palliation in the Cancer Patient
  • A Practical Approach to the Evaluation & Management of Fever in the Cancer Patient
  • A Practical Approach to the Evaluation & Management of Dyspnea in the Cancer Patient
  • A Practical Approach to the Evaluation of Abdominal Pain in the Cancer Patient
  • Central Nervous System Emergencies
  • Urgent Radiation Treatment
  • Stem Cell Transplant / Targeted Therapy / Experimental Therapeutics
  • Hematologic Emergencies
  • Interventional Radiology Emergent Procedures
  • Dermatologic Side Effects of Cancer and Cancer Treatments

In addition to our keynote speaker, Dr. Christopher Baugh of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, who will present Accelerating Hospice Initiation, we are also pleased to welcome Dr. Syed Saad Mahmood of St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center, who will speak on Cardiac Complications.

This course is designed for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses involved in the treatment and management of patients with active malignancies/cancers who present with acute complaints in an emergent room setting.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, learners will be able to:
  1. Identify and recognize the most common presenting complaints of cancer patients in emergency rooms.
  2. Discuss current and developing cancer therapeutics with respect to their side-effects and complications.
  3. Recognize the current limitations and challenges that remain in efficiently addressing cancer patient emergencies.
